  • 2 cups black beans canned, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs plain or seasoned
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped and sautéed
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 large egg or flaxseed meal mixed with water for vegan option
  • 1/4 cup cilantro optional
  • 4 buns burger buns your preferred type
Toppings
  • 1 cup lettuce for crunch
  • 1 medium tomato sliced
  • 1/2 cup cheese dairy or vegan

Method
 

Preparation Steps
  1. Drain and rinse the black beans thoroughly under cold running water. Spread on a paper towel to absorb moisture.
  2. In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Sauté onions for 3 minutes until soft, then add garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the black beans with the sautéed onion and garlic. Mash the beans until mostly smooth.
  4. Add breadcrumbs, beaten egg (or flaxseed meal), cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper to the mashed mixture. Mix until well incorporated.
  5. Form the mixture into 4 equal patties, about 1 inch thick. Optionally chill in the fridge for 10-15 minutes.
  6. In a skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes on each side until crispy and golden brown.
  7. Toast burger buns for a minute, then assemble with the patties and preferred toppings.
